Poet Derek Sheffield visits Big Bend May 23rd

On Wednesday, May 23rd, Big Bend Community College will welcome visiting poet and instructor Derek Sheffield to campus.

Sheffield’s book of poems, Through the Second Skin, was a finalist for the Washington State Book Award. His poems have appeared recently or are forthcoming in Poetry, The Georgia Review, The Gettysburg Review, Orion, and The Southern Review, and were given a special mention in the Puschart Prize Anthology. Winner of the James Hearst Poetry Prize in Poetry judged by Li-Young Lee, he has received fellowships from Artist Trust and the Sustainable Arts Foundation. He teaches poetry and ecological writing at Wenatchee Valley College and is the poetry editor of Terrain.org.

The visiting poet will speak to the public beginning at 2:30 p.m. in the ATEC Building’s Hardin Room. In addition to the public reading, he will also be visiting the Advanced Creative Writing class to discuss his process with Big Bend students.

The visit is sponsored by the Big Bend Community College Writing Club, the English Department, and the Associated Student Body.
