Eastern Washington Ag Safety Day coming to Big Bend April 27

MOSES LAKE — Progressive Agriculture Safety Day, recognized as the largest rural safety and health education program for children in North America, is coming to Big Bend Community College April 27. The event will feature fun, hands-on learning about a variety of safety topics, including first aid, farm equipment safety and fire, chemical and electrical safety.

The inaugural Eastern Washington event is being sponsored by American Family Insurance Agent Tom Cobb.

“Agriculture is one of the most dangerous professions in the world. Big machinery, large animals and fatigue from demanding hours are all contributing factors to this statistic,” said Cobb. “My grandfather was a local hog farmer and unfortunately was killed in a tractor rollover. Could a seatbelt and a rollover bar have saved him? I don’t know, but what I do know is if accident prevention and education can prevent just one injury or fatality, I want to be a part of it.”

Agricultural Safety Days have been happening for more than 20 years, providing education, training and resources to make farm, ranch and rural life safer and healthier for children and their communities. This year, more than 400 Safety Day events will take place across the United States, Canada and some U.S. Territories.

The one-day event is geared towards youth ages 4 to 13. Participants will have their choice of two sessions— 9 a.m. to Noon or 1 to 4 p.m.

At each session, participants will be divided into smaller groups and rotate between learning stations. Educational, age-appropriate and fun interactive activities and demonstrations are part of each lesson.

Each attendee will receive a free t-shirt and other goodies to take home with them. However, to ensure a t-shirt in the correct size, parents must pre-register their children by March 27.
