BBCC Campus Safety places bleeding control kits in all buildings

Bleeding control kits are now located inside each Automated External Defibrillator (AED) cabinet on campus.

MOSES LAKE — As part of ongoing efforts to keep the campus community safe, bleeding control kits have been placed in every publicly accessible building at Big Bend Community College. Each kit contains the tools needed to control severe bleeding while waiting for emergency responders to arrive — including trauma dressings, a tourniquet and a survival blanket.

“These kits are the next step as part of the college’s preparedness for an active shooter or other intentional or accidental severe wound,” said BBCC Director of Safety, Security and Emergency Management Kyle Foreman.

Foreman said uncontrolled bleeding is a major cause of preventable death from trauma. According to the Stop the Bleeding Coalition, approximately 40 percent of trauma-related deaths worldwide are due to bleeding or its consequences.

“A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes. Emergency responders will arrive as quickly as possible, but bystanders are almost always there first,” said Foreman.

Because of that, providing those bystanders with the right tools to help someone in need is critical, he said. Beyond just having the physical kits, there are also plans to train students and staff on how to use the kits.

“The greater the number of people who know how to control bleeding in an injured patient, the greater chances of surviving that injury,” said Foreman.

The new bleeding control kits are located inside all of the existing Automated External Defibrillator (AED) cabinets across campus.
