BBCC Aviation Club uses competition to aid Viking Food Pantry

MOSES LAKE —Big Bend Community College Aviation Club members delivered more than 300 pounds of non-perishable food and hygiene items to the Viking Food Pantry this week. Their donation was the result of a recent friendly competition between themselves, their fellow aviation students and their instructors.

“It started with the idea of holding a food drive, but we got creative with it and turned it into a competition,” said Aviation Club president Tyler Klein.

At the beginning of the month, the club gave each instructor a collection box and challenged them to see who could get the most students to donate to their box. At the end of the competition Terry Haws was the clear winner, with his box weighing a whopping 99 pounds.

In total, the club collected 320 pounds of items for the food pantry, including canned food, boxed meals, soap, shampoo and other various personal items.

“We wanted to help our local students and this was a creative way of doing community service close to home,” said club vice president Hudson Coleman.

They plan to leave the donation boxes out through the rest of the school year.
