Big Bend to host virtual youth summer camp

2020 STEAM Summer Camp

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend Community College’s Center for Business and Industry Services is bringing the summer camp experience online this year, with the inaugural Virtual Vikings Summer STEAM Camp.

The online camp is offered in partnership with Grant County PUD and national tech education provider Black Rocket.

Virtual Vikings Summer STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Camp kicks off July 6 and features weekly, live instructor-led classes on a variety of topics including coding, game design, eSports, virtual reality and more. Some courses are specific to popular games such as Minecraft and Pokemon.

Courses are open to youth age 8 to 14.

Parents have the flexibility to sign their kids up for courses individually, to accommodate interests and schedules. Classes run through August 21.

Big Bend CBIS program coordinator Regan Cardwell said the online camp will help keep kids connected, and learning, while at home for the summer.

“With in-person summer camps not happening, pools remaining closed, sports being postponed and trips being cancelled, how can we as a community support our youth? This is what sparked our idea of a Virtual Vikings Summer STEAM Camp as to provide kids an engaging online learning space, which they are becoming used to, and an opportunity to be social and develop new skills at the same time,” said Cardwell. “These class options are fun and relevant to what our youth are already familiar with online but taking play to a new level. Children can get connected, learn in topics they are already interested in and explore career possibilities for their future.”

Annette Lovitt, Grant PUD’s Community Relations Coordinator states “Grant PUD with our High Speed Network  is excited to partner with Big Bend to bring this summer camp opportunity to kids in our community.  This is the camp kids are wanting for a great STEAM experience, while hopefully also inspiring them on their future education and career journey.”

The average cost of each class offered during camp is $149, however, the first 50 students to sign up will receive $50 off their registration. Parents will need to first request a discount code by emailing cbisinfo@bigbend.edu in order to take advantage of the offer.
