MOSES LAKE — The Big Bend Community College TRIO Student Support Services program celebrated its group of 2024 graduates during a ceremony Tuesday night. Forty-nine students were recognized during the event in front of family and friends.

“I am super nervous, but I am happy to be here with all of you that has supported our (TRIO SSS) Class of 2024,” said Medical Assistant graduate Arturo Martinez Arriaga. “I want to thank all of the TRIO staff for their hard work and dedication to students. We’ve come a long way and now it’s time for us to shine!”

Arturo, like all TRIOO SSS students, is a first-generation college student and wants to one day become a motivational speaker.

“My father always told me that life is hard and not easy and that education, creativity, and hard work will help you to accomplish you goals and dreams in life. You are strong and powerful and once you realize that you will have everything you need to build your future.”

The TRIO SSS program at Big Bend has been on campus for more than 30 years. The goal of the program is to help motivate students to attain their educational goals, graduate and/or transfer to an institute of higher education.

TRIO advisors provide academic advising, transfer support and personal development for students who are from low-income backgrounds and who are often first-generation college students. The program also supports students with disabilities.

Student speaker Jocelyn Contreras echoed this sentiment during her graduation speech.

“The (TRIO) staff is more than just advisors … they truly care for their students,” Contreras said. “People that join TRIO will be welcomed into a kind hearted community. I would not be standing here right now if it were not for their support.”

For more information, visit the TRIO SSS program webpage. Current students interested in applying to the program can use the TRIO SSS online application. Students will need to have their BBCC Student ID number to complete the application.
