Tips

  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.0 or higherto earn the degree
  • Letter of intent must be submitted by due date to be considered for the winter clinical cohort (MA 115)
  • Prior to starting MA 115:
    • Provide evidence of a satisfactory physical exam
    • Provide evidence of up-to-date immunizations and have initiated the Hepatitis B series

Which Quarter can I begin?

The 2-year pathway starts Fall quarter. While courses may be started any quarter, this will extend time to degree completion.

Program Modality

Instruction for this program is primarily on campus. HED, BIM, and Gen Ed courses are offered online.

Length of Program

90 Credits = 4-7 Quarters

Your specific route will be determined by the number of credits you take each quarter, where you start in your math and English pathways, and the quarter you start.

Career Outlook

The Medical Assisting program prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to obtain an entry level position as a national and state certified Medical Assistant. Completion of this program leads to roles in clinics, urgent care facilities, and some larger hospitals. The certificate as well as the AAS degree will prepare students to use administrative and clinical skills in a healthcare setting that often includes multitasking, problem solving, and the ability to work as a team with other healthcare professionals. Students will obtain adult and pediatric vital signs, perform clinic based laboratory testing, assist with minor surgeries, and perform injections as well as phlebotomy.

Future Education Opportunities

This degree prepares students to pursue the Bachelor or Applied Science – Applied Management at Big Bend Community College.
