MOSES LAKE—An open house and free BBQ are part of the celebration of the long partnership between Big  Bend Community College and Heritage University on May 26  from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the courtyard outside the ATEC building.

The BBCC campus community and local people interested in higher education opportunities provided by the two schools are invited to attend. Heritage is hosting the BBQ.

BBCC and Heritage became partners in the early 1990s when Heritage established a center on BBCC’s campus to provide bachelor’s degree opportunities for local people. BBCC provides the two-year associate degree, and Heritage offers opportunities for bachelor’s degrees in Education and Social Work. A Master’s in Teaching also is available.

Today there are many Heritage University graduates teaching in schools throughout Central Washington who earned their teaching certificates attending Heritage classes at BBCC.

“The partnership with Heritage helps Big Bend be a comprehensive community college providing the residents of our service with increased opportunities to pursue their educational goals and complete the process at a fraction of the cost of most colleges and universities–all while staying close to home,” said BBCC President Terry Leas.

“We are fortunate to be able to work with institutions like Heritage that provide programs to help meet local higher education needs and for a highly skilled workforce,” Leas said.

Heritage President Dr. John Bassett said the university is hosting the BBQ for the campus and the community to “share the higher education opportunities that exist in the Columbia Basin.”

Heritage recently hired Brent Carter to the position of regional enrollment manager for the Heritage University office at BBCC. The office is in the University Center in BBCC’s ATEC building.

Carter has experience in the fields of healthcare management and education. He worked for Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, Group Health Northwest, and Kaiser Permanente in Washington, Oregon, and California. He also helped bring to Yakima the University of Washington MEDEX Physician Assistant Program.
