BBCC classes, services to remain primarily online this fall

Aviation students are getting used to the new normal of wearing masks each day and trying to practice social distancing.

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend Community College’s campus will remain primarily empty for the foreseeable future as the majority of classes will continue to be taught remotely this fall. With recent surges of Coronavirus cases both in the region and across the country, all classes that can be taught online will be taught online and student services will continue to operate in a remote environment.

Classes that cannot be taught online, such as workforce and health education labs, will be conducted on campus following social distancing guidelines and using personal protective equipment (PPE) per mandates from the Governor. Contact tracing protocols will also be conducted daily.

“BBCC faculty have years of experience teaching online.  Many have completed trainings and earned certifications for designing and delivering quality courses online,” said Vice President of Learning and Student Success Bryce Humpherys. “BBCC is expanding its legacy of providing quality online and hybrid instruction.”

Fall Quarter classes will begin on September 21, and you can get answers to any questions that you may have by calling 509-793-2089, by visiting one of our Virtual Zoom Lobbies, or by utilizing our “chat” feature located on the college’s website homepage.

Running Start information can also be found at these locations. With the COVID-19 pandemic still a very real situation in Big Bend’s service district, and effecting the way high school courses are being delivered, now is the perfect time for high school juniors and seniors to enroll in BBCC’s Running Start program and earn both high school and college credits.

Laptops are available through Big Bend for those students who may need them.

“This is not how any of us wanted to things to happen this fall, but we are continuing to adapt and find new ways to help our students,” said Dean of Student Services Andre Guzman. “It’s not what we had hoped, but we all have the safety of our students, faculty, and staff in mind and that’s what will continue to guide our decisions.”

Big Bend’s Student Administrative Support Services department, which encompasses financial aid, admissions and registration, advising, and counseling services among others, has been and will continue to meet and provide resources to students inside Virtual Zoom Lobbies or by phone.

The BBCC Bookstore has opened its doors to help students while practicing social distancing and requiring face masks but is also operating remotely for those who wish to be helped remotely.

“We are continuing to add in-person instruction as allowed by Washington State’s Safe Back to School Plan,” said Guzman. “The Governor’s office has provided a list of Essential Programs which may be offered in person, as long as colleges implement and adhere to the plan. Given the requirements of the plan, (Big Bend) is taking a cautious approach to bringing back in-person instruction and student services to ensure we are providing a safe environment.”
