MOSES LAKE — Entries are now being accepted for the Fourth annual Big Bend Community College student-writing contest. Each year judges see more than 50 original pieces from students.

“We have a great deal of talent on campus based on past contests,” said BBCC Developmental English instructor Dawnne Ernette. “We always get great submissions.”

This year’s theme is, “Inner Space, Outer Space, In Place or Out of Place”. Students can submit nonfiction pieces, such as academic research papers, essays and memoirs; fiction pieces, such as graphic novellas, plays, and short stories; and poetry.

“We have a broad theme, and almost anything will fit,” said Ernette. “For example, inner space could be your personal experiences and outer space could be something outside your knowledge. Or you could write about coming to a new school and feeling out of place.”

Ernette said students could also take the theme literally and, for example, write a science fiction piece about outer space.

One change to the contest this year is that entries will be accepted in any language. Since some students may wish to submit personal stories, they do have the option to stay anonymous during the judging process as well.

“We have a very diverse campus so we wanted students to have that freedom of expression,” said Ernette. “Students can submit their work in the language most comfortable to them.”

Ernette said there will be three prizes in each category. First place winners will each receive $100, second place winners will each receive $75 and third place winners will each receive $50.

Submissions will be accepted through March 31. The contest is open to all currently enrolled BBCC students. Winners will be notified and prizes awarded during Spring Quarter.

“I’m excited to see what comes in, and I think everyone should take a shot,” said Ernette.
