11-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion, Caio Terra at Big Bend Community College Masto Conference Center on Tuesday, October 10th, 2017. Presented by the BBCC Associated Student Body & BBCC Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club.

Big Bend Community College’s Associated Student Body and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club is excited to welcome 11-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) World Champion Caio Terra to its campus Tuesday, Oct. 10 for a motivational speech and seminar. The speech is open to the public and the seminar that follows is free to BBCC students, faculty, staff, and alumni; and $50 for those not affiliated with the college.

Terra was small in stature growing up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He weighed in at just 88 lbs. as he entered high school and enrolled in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the behest of his mother who was scared for his safety. Although not initially interested in the training, he would continue his BJJ journey and remains of the sport’s most technically sound fighters.

He would prove to the world that he was among the sports elite becoming a four-time Rio de Janeiro state champion, a five-time Brazilian National Champion, and thirteen-time World Medalist. Terra is also the ONLY eight-time International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) Black Belt World No-Gi Champion.

His story is one of motivation, overcoming the odds, and dedicating yourself to help others reach their potential. It is a story the Big Bend BJJ Instructor and Club Advisor Jeremy Seda is familiar.

“(Terra’s) powerful story of is something that moves me every time I hear it,” Seda said. “Since I started teaching BJJ in 2012, I have been honored to know many others who also have their own stories of struggle and triumph.

“People with disabilities, find new capabilities and see their physical and mental conditions improve. People who society would consider thugs find the sport enhances their good qualities while abandoning the bad. I have seen insecurities replaced with pride and self-worth; and fearful people gain sense of peace through a boost in confidence … and I personally can attribute my return from a dark place in my own life because of God, my son and starting BJJ.”

Last spring, Seda and training partner Luis Alvarez, taught the colleges first-ever BJJ course at Big Bend. He is hoping that this event will help spark even more interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Big Bend and the surrounding areas.

“To be passionate about BJJ is to be passionate about helping people,” Seda tells his students. “Every person in (his classes) wants to help you get better, because if you get better, we all get better. The BJJ Club’s goal behind bringing Terra to Big Bend is to help everyone who attends his speech or seminar experience improvement in some capacity.  Some will gain motivation, others will add to their toolbox of BJJ techniques and others may find a new passion that will positively change their lives forever.”
