Satisfactory Academic Progress

Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy

Federal and State Financial Aid regulations require all recipients to maintain satisfactory academic progress in their program of study.  To achieve satisfactory progress, students are required to maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average and complete the number of credits required according to their enrollment status each quarter.  Financial aid recipients who fail to maintain satisfactory academic progress during any quarter enrolled will be subject to financial aid probation/suspension.

To receive aid initially, (even if not previously receiving financial aid) the student must demonstrate academic progress by obtaining a cumulative grade point average of at least a 2.0 previously.  The student transcript will be reviewed prior to offering any financial aid.

Review the following to determine eligibility status:

1.

If you are enrolled FULL-TIME (12 or more credits)

Satisfactory:

12 or more credits completed with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater.

Probation:

6-11 credits completed with a cumulative GPA of 1.0 or greater.

Suspension:

less than 6 credits completed or cumulative GPA is less than 1.0.

2.

If you are enrolled 3/4-TIME (9-11 credits)

Satisfactory:

9 or more credits completed with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater.

Probation:

6-8 credits completed with a cumulative GPA of 1.0 or greater.

Suspension:

less than 6 credits completed or cumulative GPA is less than 1.0.

3.

If you are enrolled 1/2-TIME (6-8 credits)

Satisfactory:

6 or more credits completed with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater.

Probation:

3-5 credits completed with a cumulative GPA of 1.0 or greater.

Suspension:

less than 3 credits completed or cumulative GPA is less than 1.0.

4.

If you are enrolled LESS THAN 1/2-TIME (1-5 credits)

Satisfactory:

all credits enrolled in completed with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater.

Probation:

less than # of credits enrolled in completed (must be greater than 0) with a cumulative GPA of 1.0 or greater.

Suspension:

less than 1 credit completed or cumulative GPA is less than 1.0.

Students who are on probation must complete the required credits for their enrollment status and maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or their remaining financial aid will be canceled.  A student may be on probation a maximum of three times while attending BBCC.

Only numerical grades of 0.7 to 4.0 and letter grade “P” will count toward completed credits.  Grades of “0.0”, “I”, “N”, and “W” do not count toward completed credits and do not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements.

The minimum number of credits to be completed per quarter must apply toward a degree or certificate or be required remedial courses.   A student who received an “I” cannot repeat the class and have those credits count towards the minimum credit requirement for financial aid.

Financial Aid at Big Bend will be awarded for a maximum of nine quarters for most degree programs.  Failure to complete an academic degree within the nine quarters will be considered unsatisfactory academic progress and no additional financial aid will be awarded.  Extenuating circumstances may be appealed to the Financial Aid Office.  The number of degree programs funded will be limited to two.  This limitation can also be appealed based on circumstances.

If there is a change in the number of credits completed or grade point, the probation/suspension status of the student may be changed.  If so, any previous action for the quarter may be voided.

Students on probation are not allowed to use their financial aid to register early for the next quarter.
