Michael De Hoog – Head Coach
Coach De Hoog begins his fifth season at the helm of the Viking’s volleyball program. The Vikings return four sophomores and have added four more new faces to the program.
“Having four returning players from last year's team will definitely help. We made it to the NWAACC tournament and didn't have the results we expected. I know they are hungry to get back and represent our region and school . With the tenacity and focus that each of them and the new players have, it will be a very enjoyable team to coach." -Coach De Hoog
In his thirteen years of coaching, De Hoog has been involved at just about every level of coaching. He has been a part of the United States Volleyball Association (USAV) juniors programs for nine years. Of those eight years, he spent four seasons with the nationally elite Spokane Splash program. In 2001, he started the Kamali’i Volleyball Club in the Columbia Basin to further the sport of volleyball in the area.
De Hoog also spent two years as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Whitworth College, where he graduated (1997) with Bachelor Degrees in Sports Medicine and Physical Education. The time spent there helped to instill a desire to coach at the collegiate level.
“I really enjoy all aspects of the college athletic environment. Being involved year round with your program is very satisfying, whether it's recruiting, practices, travel or off-season workouts. It really helps the team become more of a family and you see a tremendous amount of growth in each girl.”
His goals for the program are still the same as when he arrived. First on the list is recruiting the best local talent and complementing it with players from around the region. The next is to build a tradition of winning, which De Hoog believes is right around the corner.
“Right now I am very excited about the group of student-athletes we have. The sophomores bring a year of experience and know where they want to take this team and program. Our freshmen have made a great transition. They come from successful programs and know how to win and believe in what we as a coaching staff are asking of them. All of our girls are committed to each other, the team and what it takes to get where we want to go…the NWAACC tourney.”
In addition to coaching volleyball, De Hoog also fills many other roles on campus. He is the Activities Center Supervisor, a Physical Education instructor, Athletic Trainer for all of the Viking athletic programs and is the Huddle Director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes group.
